I wrote "What Comes Next" in Perth, in the wake of the 2016 US presidential election. America felt farther away than the Sun. The 1930s seemed closer than yesterday.

Bret Mosley / Perth, Western Australia Americana

Americana artist BRET MOSLEY smiles off to the side, “I first picked up my father’s Stella Harmony guitar when I was six. A few years later—a good while before turntables became musical instruments—I turned a Chet Atkins record by hand to learn “Yakety Axe” note-by-note. I still have the guitar, even though some dear soul at UPS drove a forklift through it several years ago…the culmination to an extremely uphill stint in L.A. It was that experience, though, that helped wring out my first song, “Lord, Girl”…I still need to record that one.”

Rarely could an artist be said to transcend, yet include, the most raw and real elements of country, folk, soul, roots rock and blues. Nevertheless—with bone-deep authenticity—that’s exactly what Bret Mosley does, wrestling deftly with longing, belonging, and world-weariness...on the way home to hope & grace.

Mosley’s critically-acclaimed debut album Light & Blood was released in December 2007 on Woodstock MusicWorks, and hailed as “a heart-felt masterpiece” by NeuFutur Magazine. The album’s thirteen tracks were recorded over a two-day span in March 2007 by Pete Caigan (Bad Brains, Tony Levin) at Flymax Studio in Woodstock, NY. The record was mixed by Grammy-nominated engineer Roman Klun (Sarah McLachlan, Joan Osborne, Spin Doctors). Every track was performed live with no overdubs or punch-ins. The result is at once lean and lush...a smoldering confessional work...soulful Americana laced with a driving groove...and a few thousand self-distributed copies later, an Australian reissue of Light & Blood dropped in November 2015.

Mosley toured tirelessly across the U.S.—200+ dates per year—following the album’s release and enthusiastic reception. With signature idiosyncratic intensity, his unreservedly original, deeply authentic sound has garnered an audience ranging from cowhands to bankers, from rastas to cops.

“My music career is the culmination of a fairly common path,” he jokes, “before making that first record, I did the usual things: ranch hand, linebacker, fur trapper, ballet dancer, stockbroker, actor, computer programmer, Pilates instructor & art handler…in that order. But, I’ve been touring for the past 10 years, and most of the time it somehow seems like the only thing I’ve ever done…gratefully.”

Just after the release of Light & Blood, the venerated, archetypal musician’s musician Jerry Joseph attended a downtown NYC show of Bret’s. That changed the whole game for Mosley.

“Jerry has invited me to tour and record with him off and on ever since. He opened up the entire U.S. to me as a touring artist.” In 2008, Bret released the EP Charge with Jerry Joseph and drummer Steve Drizos on Joseph’s Cosmo Sex School label.

Mosley has opened for George Porter, Jr., Trombone Shorty, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, Cedric Burnside Project, the Subdudes, Patterson Hood, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Jackie Greene, Good Enough For Good Times, Junior Brown, Donavon Frankenreiter, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Kaki King, Kelly Joe Phelps, et al—comparisons have included Chris Whitley, John Butler, Xavier Rudd, Richie Havens, Van Morrison, Ben Harper and Taj Mahal.

U.S. festival appearances have included Mountain Jam, Wave Gathering, NedFest, JazzFest, SXSW. In Australia, he has played Blues at Bridgetown and Nukara Music Festival. During May and June of 2016, Mosley was ranked Reverbnation.com’s #1 Americana artist in Western Australia.

Mosley's latest studio effort, X-ING, was released October 29, 2013 on his own Out Of The Park Records. He has begun production on his next record at Quarter After Blue Studios in Tupelo, Mississippi. The project will feature guest appearances by several prominent Mississippi artists.

Living in Perth since late 2014, Bret is building touring momentum in Australia—having shared the stage recently with Ian Moss, Morgan Bain, Minnie Marks, The Pierce Brothers, Kalidad, The Hussy Hicks, Blue Shaddy, Tex Perkins and John Meyer.

"The blues is one of those genres that can easily become a paint-by-numbers kind of game, plugging in the required elements where they’re supposed to go. Bret Mosley takes the paintbrush and breaks it in two, creating something with the jagged edges that’s more authentically blues than most of what passes for the real thing these days. Mosley is a dobro player, lending his songs a dangerous, haunting tonal quality that brings to mind the late Chris Whitley."
- Kevin Oliver, Free Times

"Bret Mosley ripped up his slide guitar...delivered a cutting set with a bluesy, snarly, lowdown sound. His bare feet matched the raw power of his persona and voice, making you want to simultaneously dance and cry.delivered a cutting set with a bluesy, snarly, lowdown sound. "Rarely do I walk into a venue with an audience so captivated by the onstage performance that it causes a mystical quiet to resonate throughout the room...the deep focus and concentration on the faces of the intimate crowd suggested something much more substantial than a typical concert. This night wasn't about entertainment. It was communion...a group of people together to watch a man pour out his emotions through his music, and stories to deliver peace and hope to the seekers…As if he was sent to summon a message to the people, Bret slapped and slid his way across his resonator guitar with a fiery, authentic performance that has since impacted my perceptions of what a live show should be. In a world where concert productions are becoming more outlandish as the days go on, Bret's performance reminded me that it's the music and enthusiasm of the people playing that keep me coming back for more."

Muso to bring a slice of Americana-Geraldton Guardian
Muso to bring a slice of Americana-Geraldton Guardian

US musician Bret Mosley will be bringing his Americana sound to the Bootenal Family Tavern this Saturday night for an intimate performance.

Although Mosley is often categorised as a blues musician, his style is an amalgamation of many different musical genres.

“The way I would describe my music is Americana,” he said.

“It’s a genre that is coming into its own, that is comprised of the essence of American root forms — blues, bluegrass, gospel, RnB and country.

“It’s none of those pure source genres, but it is the thing they share, the common spirit that underpins the genres.”

Music has always been a part of Mosley’s life. He grew up in a musical family and was singing and playing guitar from an early age.

“I started singing to people when they walked in the house when I was three,” he said.

“I was really committed to learning how to play and sing by the time I was six or seven.”

Mosley hadn’t always planned to be a musician, working a variety of jobs throughout his life including work as a computer programmer and an actor.

“Music sort of waited patiently the whole time until I really committed to following it,” he said.

“One of the pivotal experiences in that progression was going out into the subways and busking in New York.

“That’s when I began to strip away the safety nets that I had maintained up until that point.”

Mosley released his debut album, Light & Blood, in 2007 and has toured extensively around America, clocking up more than 2000 shows.

Born in south Texas in a mountain valley close to the Mexican border, Mosley lived all over the United States, attending 28 schools and constantly on the move as his father was in the navy. In 2014, Mosley decided to move from Brooklyn to Perth, something he had wanted to do for a while.

“For many years, there have been many things that sort of called me to Australia,” he said.

“I think it’s the greatest place in the world — the musical opportunity and the audience I’ve found here has really sealed the deal for me.

“I see myself settling in Australia, absolutely, it’s my home.”

Mosley said he was looking forward to playing at the Bootenal Family Tavern because it gave him a chance to interact with the crowd. “It’s a listening-room setting — that’s such a treat for me,” he said.

“It’s about an intimate experience of the music, as opposed to me sitting in the corner being in the background, which I’m no good at.

“The real heart of what I do is connection. I want to connect with who’s in the room. I try to get really involved with the people who are listening, and talk with them.”
