Formed in 2010, Charlie Patton's War is blues/rock band consisting of Aaron Frazer (vocals, drums), Blake Rhein (vocals, guitar), Kyle Houpt (guitar), and Justin Hubler (keyboards/ piano). Their music is often described as having the heavy modern blues-rock edge of artists such as The Black Keys, but also an audible nod to earlier influences of Delta blues and soul music.
Spending the first year developing their blues-rock sound, the band hit the local and regional concert scene hard in 2012. That year, the band opened for notable artists such as The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, Hanni El Khatib, and Mount Carmel, as well as headlining many local shows. They performed at the legendary Deep Blues Festival in 2012, joining a lineup that included many blues newcomers and veterans such as David Kimbrough, Jr., Ben Prestage, Left Lane Cruiser, and Brian Olive among others. The time on the road helped the band fine-tune and shape the songs which would become the tracklist for their first album.
The self-titled, debut album Charlie Patton’s War was released on April 25, 2013; it was recorded, mixed, and mastered by the band members themselves. The album includes eleven tracks of varying blues styles from rock n’ roll to gospel and impressively captures the talent and musicianship of the band. Shortly after its digital release, Charlie Patton's War spent two weeks as one of the top-selling Blues albums on bandcamp.com and was later included in jazz musician and author Ted Gioia's "100 Best Albums of 2013" list.
These days the band is committed to playing every stage possible and has seen Charlie Patton's War perform at the Juke Joint Festival, WIUX Culture Shock Music Festival, Linton Music Festival, Nutella Fest, and The Shack Up Inn. They've shared the stage as supporting and headlining acts with bands including Shivering Timbers, Ha Ha Tonka, Dan Deacon, A Lion Named Roar, Lightnin' Malcolm, Tank and the Bangas, The Bears of Blue River, The Broderick, and Fluffer.

Review from Charlie Patton's War's two-night, three-show stay in Clarksdale, MS at Shack Up Inn and Bluesberry Café by Clarksdale blog Delta Bohemian. Include video/audio footage from the performances. "...Both vocalists can sing their asses off, and the band’s old-school sound is as tight as the seal on an unopened beer can. All the lyrics have a depth not often seen among young songwriters. Hubler’s keyboard subtly bolsters each song without overpowering the drum/guitar sound so familiar to hill country blues enthusiasts. As is the case with many blues bands, all the members can play an array of instruments and will switch from song to song. Though Charlie Patton’s War’s overall sound is refreshingly reminiscent of the Black Keys and Jack White, it’s sound is all its own." Source

|Dec 06, 2013||District of Folk: Charlie Patton's War @ Solly's
While blues isn't my normal forte, I was almost immediately jamming to their music while cranking out my projects at work... In addition to their own songs, they played an exceptional cover of Alabama Shakes' Hold On. I was floored. With Boys & Girls, Alabama Shakes essentially set a precedent for what modern day blues-style music should live up to. As much as I love the original version of Hold On, Charlie Patton's War did a fantastic job delivering a piece that exceeded that precedent. The same thought can apply to their cover of J.D. McPherson's North Side Gal, another personal highlight of mine that evening. The ability for modern artists to find inspiration in and honor retro music is a trend I don't want to end any time soon. Charlie Patton's War joins the likes of Alabama Shakes, J.D. McPherson, Pickwick, Fitz & the Tantrums, Elin Ruth, Radiation City and others in proving that there's room to improve even in classic rock and pop. Source

For only the second time, student college radio DJs from across America are ready to release their College Radio Day Album (Vol. 2) on November 12 everywhere digitally plus a limited edition double CD of only 1,500 copies. The album, like its predecessor from 2012, will raise funds for college radio stations. All the tracks on the double album are picked by students from college radio stations from around the nation. On the first disc are known artists that publicly stand with college radio. On this year's album are Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Passenger (only on the physical disc), RNDM, Jukebox the Ghost, Lucius, Matt Pond, The Front Bottoms, Charlie Peacock and many more artists. The second disc of the album houses artists that are typically unsigned but are captured playing college radio sessions in college radio stations around the country. Artists such as Apache 5, Crisscross Albatross, Charlie Patton’s War, The Soft Pack and more have all been selected for the album for the brilliance and vibrancy of their live college radio performances. All the proceeds from the album go to the College Radio Fund. This fund is to help radio stations that don't have much funding to keep going with things they need like equipment, paying licensing costs, etc. They will essentially be able to write a request for funds from the CRF to help them out. "As 6 p.m rolled along, so did the crowd, who came in droves after temperatures began to approach comfortable levels. Blues rock band Charlie Patton’s War seized the moment on Saturday. The Bloomington four-piece returned to Linton after making their LMF debut last year on the Greene County General Hospital stage. Capitalizing on the buzz generated from that performance, and promoting a new album, CPW proved to everyone that they are more than deserving of the main stage time slot they received this year. Lion Named Roar smartly capitalized on the fast growing crowd in front of the Linton Family Pharmacy Main Stage, delivering great song after great song with surgeon-like precision."
