Chico Freeman’s musical journey has been one akin to that of an alchemist, provide¬ing the Midas touch to not only his projects, but also helping to create gold for others within the jazz, rhythm & blues, pop and world music musical realms.
A legendary concert at Lincoln Center in June 1982, by The Young Lions, a group critics hailed as the brightest hopes of jazz in the 1980’s - Chico Freeman, Wynton Marsalis, Paquito D’Rivera, Kevin Eubanks, Anthony Davis, and others - pro¬duced an album on which Freeman plays nearly every cut. His 14-minute composi¬tion “Whatever Happened To The Dream Deferred?” was called “one of the best of the album” by the New York Times.
In 1986, when promoters in Europe were organizing superstar bands, Free¬man brought together The Leaders - an all-star sextet of internationally recognized bandleaders. The groups first incarnation consisted of Don Cherry, Chico Freeman, Arthur Blythe, Don Pullen, Cecil McBee and Famadou Don Moye. Subsequent forma¬tions included Hilton Ruiz and finally the last incarnation saw Kirk Lightsey and Lester Bowie. This group set the standard for eclectic and innovative music from a band comprised entirely of composers/improvisers.
The “Leaders” has been reformed with Eddie Henderson - trumpet, Bobby Watson - alto sax, Chico Freeman - tenor and soprano sax, Fred Harris - piano, Buster Wil¬liams - bass and Michael Baker - drums. The group has just successfully completed a European tour and recorded a CD “Spirits Alike”
In 1991, during the 150 year anniversary celebration of the invention of the saxo¬phone by Adolphe Sax, the band Roots was formed. This band consisted of interna¬tionally known saxophonists Nathan Davis, Benny Golson, Arthur Blythe, and Chico Freeman. Adding Buster Williams (bass), and Ed Thigpen (drums), this band is still touring the world, and delighting audiences with their unique arrangements, and brilliant improvisation.
More recently Freeman has recorded and performed with: McCoy Tyner Trio w/ Chico Freeman (5 years), Dizzy Gillespie, Elvin Jones (4 years), Reggie Workman, Herbie Hancock, Bill Cosby, Don Pullen, Sam Rivers, Jack DeJohnette’s Special Edition (5 years), Dewey Redman, Dave Holland, Don Cherry, Sonny Rollins, Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Kevin Eubanks, Muhal Richard Abrams, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Chucho Valdes, Irakere, Paquito d’Rivera, Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, Cassandra Wilson, Arturo Sandoval, among many others Freeman has performed in many types of jazz and world music collaborations: Antonio Gades, Paco de Lucia and other artists in flamenco music, traditional Japanese Shakuhachi flute music, Indian music, various styles of African music, as well as Afro-Cuban and Brazilian musical forms. Was a featured VIP artist at the “Festival Mondial des Arts Negres” (Black World Arts Festival) in Senegal Dec. 2010.
Svante Henryson is a unique musician. A virtuoso of three instruments, a composer of orchestral music, and an improviser fluent in all musical languages, he moves boundlessly across the entire musical spectrum. As a cellist, performing in jazz, world music or rock, he makes the cello sound as if it always belonged there. Be it in a raga duo with Indian guitarist Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, with a jazz big band, or in front of a symphony orchestra, the voice of his cello is instantly recognizable.
Svante grew up in Umeå in northern Sweden, playing at the local jazz clubs as a fourteen-year-old bass player. As a double bassist, still in his teens and halfway through music college, he became a member of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Soon after making his debut as a soloist with the orchestra he became its Principal Double Bassist. Svante was also the Principal Bass of the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra led by Iona Brown.
Following that was a three-year stint as a bass guitarist with rock guitar legend Yngwie Malmsteen. Stevie Wonder is also on the list of previous encounters of his Fender bass.
As a cellist, Svante Henryson has developed a style all is own, taking the instrument to where it has never been before musically.
As a composer, his list of works includes two concertos for cello and one for the electric bass guitar, as well as symphonic, choral, chamber, and jazz music. Noted performers of his chamber works include Anne-Sofie von Otter, Elvis Costello, Martin Fröst and Roland Pöntinen. As an improviser, Svante belongs to the top layer of modern Scandinavian jazz musicians, working with Steve Gadd, Jon Balke, Terje Rypdal, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Wayne Krantz and Arve Henriksen to name a few.
The latest release is "Night Song" on ECM Records, a duo album with pianist Ketil Bjørnstad.
Svante Henryson currently lives in Stockholm, Sweden.
