Ginger Ibex - Firefly Boston Street Pianos Festival 10/5/2013 www.streetpianos.com/boston
One of Sharon Crumrine's earliest influences was Beethoven, whose music alternately rocks the world or moves listeners to tears with its dark lyrical beauty. She was also deeply affected by the Romantic Classical composers (Schubert, Rachmaninoff), Impressionistic composers, Middle Eastern modes, Tango and contemporary Rock.
Betty Widerski's radically eclectic background (Classical gone Irish Punk/Rock/Improv) and endless creative & technical ability on a wild variety of stringed instruments, plus some percussion added to the mix, give Ginger Ibex a powerful yet lyrical sound.
Melika Fitzhugh's wide range of instrumental skills (including violin, guitar, percussion, bass and more) plus her love of Balkan music in odd meters make her ready for any musical style Ginger Ibex explores.

"The combo Ginger Ibex makes use of strings, piano, and percussion along with a wealth of ethnic influences and selected classical chops to create a sound that is as hard to classify as it is beguiling. But don’t worry that this show will be a rarified affair — it’s part of Mickey Bliss’s long-running Club Bohemia series in the basement of the Cantab, one of the few remaining relics of pre-gentrification Cambridge." – Noah Schaffer Source

“Keith Jarrett, Astor Piazzolla and Sergei Rachmaninov walk into a bar.” It sounds like the start of a nerdy music school joke but an ensuing jam session between the jazz, tango and classical music icons might give you an idea of Ginger Ibex’s sound. However, when you consider that the group’s collective influences also include punk, metal, pop, Celtic, Indian, and Middle Eastern music, and that they’ve covered Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android” and Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” all bets are off at nailing them down. |Oct 14, 2009||"Firefly" Album Review by Sepiachord.com
"A goodly number of sepiachord fans are drawn to soundtracks. They love the implied visuals of intrumental works, they are pulled in by the epic nature of the songs, they enjoy the feeling of modern music that is also classic(al)… if this sounds like you then you should snatch up a copy of Ginger Ibex debut release, “Firefly”." "Simply put the music on “Firefly” is lovely." "this is what makes this collection rewarding on multiple listens: the variety of mood and sound. You haven’t heard everything by Ginger Ibex because you’ve heard one song or even one tango. “Firefly” is rich in depth and satisfying on a soulful level." Source
