RafiyaMusic / New York AfroPop, Singer, Songwriter

Rafiya was born in Los Angeles to Congolese parents. She traveled extensively during her formative years: living in Congo (Democratic Republic), the Cape Verde Islands, Benin, Senegal, Guinea, Barbados and Ivory Coast. She moved to Philadelphia in 2001 to attend Temple University where she double majored in Sociology and Spanish.

She grew up in a musical household. Her grandfather was a choir director and her father was a music lover who would come home from trips around the world with records for the family to hear. From a young age, her parents had her singing and performing for houseguests with her twin sister, Ihaku, who sings backup at live performances. Rafiya's desire to perform professionally was galvanized when she was 8 years old and she and Ihaku got to sing and dance for a stadium-sized audience during a multi-performer festival in Benin.

"I just remember performing and looking up into the crowd and people were smiling and dancing and at that moment I was just like 'Wow!' " she says. "Music can change people's moods. It can bring people together."

Rafiya counts fellow Africans Youssou N'dour (Senegal), Angelique Kidjo (Benin), Miriam Makeba (South Africa) and Lokua Kanza (Democratic Republic of the Congo) as her biggest musical influences, though she also credits Mariah Carey with being the artist who "made me want to sing." A product of her times and surroundings, there is certainly a thread of American R&B and hip-hop in a lot of Rafiya's music as well.

While attending school full-time in the aforementioned nations, Rafiya found time to work with local artists, absorbing their techniques and wisdom all the while enriching her sound. She has worked with Oscar Kidjo, recorded in Youssou N’Dour’s studio and toured France and North Africa with French rap star, Mokobe.

Every passing collaboration, studio session and performance strengthened her ever-present belief that she would be spending her life making music; making people smile, dance and think.

"I think music is just really powerful," Rafiya says. "It has the power to uplift, to bring down and I want to use music to uplift people, to inspire people, to bring people joy, to make people think — all in good ways."

The audience, she says, "can expect to dance. It's going to be a party."
