The OF Get New Zealand Love! — 06/06/2016

June 6th, 2015 Some fine press for Escape Goat from Graham Reid in Elsewhere, “The Green Monkey label out of Seattle is the home to some fascinating artists . . . They are certainly . . . unpredictable. The OF appear to be a fairly flexible ensemble which bring together left-field rock, falling apart jazz tropes, spoken word samples and song titles which might have fallen off a Frank Zappa or Zoogz Rift album.”

The OF / Roslyn Experimental Guitar Rock!

The OF. Pioneers of Foil-Rock. Men of The Colander. Owners of the worst Google search band name of all time. The OF hail from Roslyn, Washington, a dinky mountain town in the Cascades Range.

The OF are the brainchild of one John Carey. Composer, guitar player, booker, recording engineer, producer, beardo, bard. OF Dude #1. The OF have just released their second album Escape Goat. Like their first album (Oh, It’s The OF) Escape Goat has mostly long songs with many parts. With Guitars and other noise-makers. You may find them beautiful. You may find them complicated. You may find them weird. All good with us. The OF are unique and that is no longer an easy thing to be.

For their first album, Oh It's The OF, they were a four piece. Since, they have added another guitar player and a sax player and sometimes percussion, which means they are now an advancing army of six or seven. Two weeks ago they fired their singer Pat. Now John and Mike the Other Guitar Player sing. Still all good.

The OF are a true performing band and can be seen at various NW nightspots ranging from Bellingham to Wenatchee to Portland. They always bring the colanders.

John Carey has been around the block. At least twice. In his feckless youth he played bass for the legendary Seattle dead-cat-swinging punkers The Refuzors . He also played bass for the mighty Queen Annes and can still be persuaded to do so from time to time.

John has built a studio in his garage where he like to go and compose every day. Ain't we lucky!

The Gutch-Master Thoughtfully Considers The OF’s ESCAPE GOAT!

Mr. Frank Gutch Jr. writes: “Man, can I hear the theatrical side of The OF on It’s a New World, the opening track of their new Escape Goat album. Equal parts Modest Mussorgsky and Richard Rodgers, it opens the curtain to one hellacious and adventurous album, the rock side teeming with jazz and art rock— Zappa and, of all bands, The Flock slipping like a dense fog into what is maybe not a completely new world but one we have neither seen nor heard for awhile.” And more at INDIE MUSICOLOGY.

LOVE FOR THE OF FROM FRANK GUTCH JR.

Sez Frank: “The OF have been denting my ears a lot lately. Escape Goat has the sensitivity of Zappa with the instrumental levitations of The Flock and the madness of The Firesign Theater. Had I not already deluged this column with their video of Damn Dirty Hippie, I would post it again to give you the slightest idea. Hell, I will do it anyway. Be forewarned, though. The album is much more schizophrenic than this track would have you believe. Some of their jams are plain manic!” From: Segarini: Don’t Believe a Word I Say Dissecting Pop Culture Since 2011. Great Music. Great Stories. Great Googa Mooga.

The OF Receives Yet Another Thoughtful Review!

“Carey’s “compositions” flow like stream of conscious ramblings of the local sewer-dwelling lunatic wandering your local streets at night, reeking of urine and cigarettes and promising the end is near because, like, you know, Gold told him personally over breakfast at the local diner yesterday morning.” Jeff Penczak SoundBlab

BOOK REVIEWS ESCAPE GOAT!

More great press for THE OF! “In other words, it’s the kind of uneasy rock that enjoys going on travels with you and themselves, and they’re not ready to be comfortable by staying in one spot. Escape Goat is that goat being spanked on a mountain on a road to who knows where, the fun part is to watch where it plans on ending up.” John Book – This Is Book’s Music

THE OF GETS A FINE REVIEW IN EXPOSE’!

“In spite of the often haphazard-sounding result, it’s clear that a lot of planning went into this recording, and a lot of imagination unfettered by conventions. . . Unpredictable, imaginative, wacky, and complex are all adjectives that apply. You’ll often say, ‘Whoa, didn’t see that coming! Cool.’” Jon Davis – expose’

ESCAPE GOAT Reviewed in JERSEY BEAT!

By Leslie Synder. “Is the world coming to a screeching halt? The answer to the million dollar question is, yes. This is according to an independent pop rock quintet out of Seattle, Washington called The Of. The Of sings solemn, yet haunting songs about the possibility of the apocalypse coming and what the world will look like when the apocalypse is over while sounding similar to the late Frank Zappa with their moaning vocals and eerie, but brutally intense pop rock melodies that will instill fear in the minds of listeners everywhere. . . ”

VIDEO: The OF’s “Damn, Dirty Hippy”

The OF released a new album on Tuesday called Escape Goat (Green Monkey) and from it is the very clean “Damn, Dirty Hippy”, which sounds funny but the song is quite serious (in its own way, at least). It’s the band’s second album and they’re ready to share it with old fans and newbies alike.

"the self-named “foil-rock” quintet creates music as eclectic as its members"

“The OF, Oh, It’s the OF (out now): It’s not often that a CD begins with a spoken introduction, but when the first song revolves around a hermit crab and some seagulls fighting over a french fry, it’s nice to have a little help. Using standard rock instrumentation plus cello, mandolin, and triangle in unusual ways, the self-named “foil-rock” quintet creates music as eclectic as its members’ onstage attire: tinfoil togas and colanders as hats. "This Roslyn WA avant garde band is no joke" Jack Goldstein

"I was especially impressed with the instrumentals. “Sodo Monkey Pt 1” and “Sodo Monkey Pt 2” feature jamming guitars, and the 14-minute “Mouse Trash Recipe” is a modernist instrumental jazz suite with some very effective solo work that rocks from beginning to end. There are some vocal sounds here that will either put you in mind of composers like John Cage or have you giggling in derision." "The Of is a great independent rock pop quintet who is not afraid to tackle the “fear of the unknown” with dark and obnoxious melodies that cover many different genres of music. The quintet’s latest CD “Oh It’s the Of” is a haunting, but whimsical journey

“Oh It’s the Of” By Leslie Snyder A strange trip begins in Roslyn, Washington from an independent rock pop quintet called The Of. The Of sounds similar to “foil rock” pioneers Devo and the late Frank Zappa with their “creepy” rock pop melodies that would be great in a horror, or science fiction movie that would send chills up one’s spine while listening to this cool, but offbeat “bone chilling” collection of music. The Of will release their latest CD “Oh It’s the of” on July 16, 2013 featuring twelve ominous tracks. The frightening journey begins with the first track “Soft belly Crab Excerpt.” This track features “galactic” spoken word vocals and “groaning” rock pop melodies. This track is a lonely tale about a poor little creature living on the beach and constantly being overtaken by “crashing” ocean waves. Meanwhile, the frightening journey continues with the sixth track “Can’t Stop Listening.” This track features “eerie’ chanting and “brooding” rock pop melodies. This track is a devious tale about Martians trying to invade the Planet Earth. Finally, the frightening journey ends with the eleventh track “Thrompnobulous.” This track is a dreary instrumental track featuring “chanting” sounds and “groaning” rock pop melodies, along with the sound of a gloomy cello “murmuring” throughout the track. This track is a dark tale about lonely people walking through a rainy city with absolutely no hope in their lives. The Of is a great independent rock pop quintet who is not afraid to tackle the “fear of the unknown” with dark and obnoxious melodies that cover many different genres of music. The quintet’s latest CD “Oh It’s the Of” is a haunting, but whimsical journey through humanity’s wild imagination. http://elephanttalkindie.wordpress.com/2013/07/14/oh-its-the-of-by-leslie-snyder-2/
